Diabetes Foot Assessment

A diabetes foot assessment is a vital annual check up for individuals with diabetes to monitor their foot health, prevent complications and detect early signs of foot problems. The assessment includes a comprehensive examination of the feet and legs including the circulation, sensation, skin integrity and biomechanical function.

During the foot assessment the podiatrists at Toorak Village Podiatry will check the skin and nails for signs of damage or infection. The foot posture, mechanics and gait will be reviewed, which if problematic can sometimes cause areas of pressure or friction resulting in skin changes. The sensation to the feet will be checked using a monofilament and tuning fork. Diabetic neuropathy is a complication that may affect people with diabetes and can cause numbness, tingling or burning sensations in the feet. Finally, the blood flow will be analysed, checking pulses, temperature and skin integrity. If required a hand held doppler ultrasound is used to further investigate the blood flow.

The diabetes foot assessment is a crucial preventative measure that aims to identify potential problems early before they advance to more serious complications of the feet or lower limb. We recommend an annual diabetes foot assessment and regular podiatry management if required.

Taking proper care of the feet, regular exercise and maintaining healthy blood sugar levels can help minimise the risk of complications. We can help you achieve this and keep you on your feet!
